Ergonomics: Preventing Pain for Lash Artists

Updated: Jan 15, 2020

As lash artists we are in the business of caring for other people all day. It is so important we take these few steps to protect our own wellness and prevent body pain. Having poor ergonomics while lashing can cause irrefutable damage to our bodies. Here are a few tips and tricks to protect yourself while working in the spa room all day! Prevent carpel tunnel and prevent shoulder and back pain!

  1. Ensure your client's head is at chest level, or slightly below.

  2. Ensure your feet are flat on the floor. You may need to adjust the height of your chair and bed to accomplish this.

  3. Lean into the bed with your arms, not your back.

  4. Use proper tools to prevent hand and wrist pain.

  5. Make sure you have GREAT lighting

Take the time to protect yourself so you can work for years to come!

Make sure your posture is good.

Keep a straight back while lashing, so that your arms aren't stretching up and your stool isn’t set too high that you are leaning over. A general rule of thumb is your client's head should be at chest level.

A wide bed or massage table allows you to rest your weight on the table, either on your elbows or forearms. This helps keep your arms straight and in the correct position. Your movement should be in your fingertips and your entire arm, not in the wrists.

By leaning on the table you will preform better work, avoid leaning on clients face and have more control.

Choose the right tools.

It is crucial that you choose high quality tweezers that are not too loose nor too tight. Your hands should not be doing a lot of work. Tweezers come in many lengths so make sure you choose a length that is right for your hand size. Even a slight change in hand positioning can help alleviate and prevent cramping.

Here are my favourites:

  • I love these volume tweezers for maximum Control in fan creation and pick up.

  • Curved tweezers are awesome for isolation because they allow you to keep your wrist straight rather than bent down while isolating hairs. The fine tips make isolation fast and precise with less work.

  • Straight and Curved Tweezers above allow for easy banana peeling and separating. I love these tweezers when I need to get into the bases of the lashes and remove an old one or separate lashes that may be touching. the wide flat tips give them a great grip and maximum control over the hairs to prevent accidental pulling.

Bottom line, you want a selection of tools so that you have options for different tasks. Make sure to have duplicates of your favourites, just in case one gets dropped and bent.
