It’s a fact – people love lash extensions. Luckily, most people can safely wear eyelash extensions. But not every eye is suitable for lash extensions. As the lash technician, how will you know who can wear lashes and who can’t? There are some telltale signs that can help you determine suitable candidates for lash extensions.
Identifying Lashes Suitable for Lash Extensions
As a lash technician, you get the opportunity to meet new people every day. Having an eye for which eyes are suitable for lashing is extremely important. Only applying lash extensions to clients with healthy and suitable eyes protects you, your business, and your reputation. It also protects the health of your clients.
Eyes that are suitable for eyelash extensions:
• Are healthy looking at first glance
• Are clear of debris and pus
• Have white sclera and healthy pink conjunctiva
• Should not be watery, red, dry, itchy, or burning
• Have natural lashes to which extensions can be applied
Identifying Lashes NOT Suitable for Lash Extensions
Being able to identify an eye that’s not suitable for lashing is as important as being able to identify healthy, suitable eyes. There are general indications that an eye is not suitable for lashing, such as:
Redness
Generally unhealthy-looking eyes
Debris and build-up
Flaking on eyelids or around lash lines
Evidence of lash mites (we all have lash mites, but they should not be visible to the naked eye)
Evidence of lice (anything visible to the naked eye, or anything noticeable before or during the lash application session)
Should your client exhibit any signs that their eyes are not suitable for lashing, be prepared to discuss them with your client. Tell your client what you see and that you cannot apply the lash extensions for their safety, and yours.
Never diagnose a client. You may wish to use phrases such as “I suspect that you have lash mites,” or “It appears that your eyes are redder than usual.” Suggest that they follow up with a medical professional for a formal diagnosis and treatment. Be firm in your decision to not apply lash extensions until the client has seen a medical professional. Unless it turns out that your client has a condition that makes lash extension application impossible, be sure to tell the client to return when they’ve been treated, and that you’ll be happy to apply their eyelash extensions at that time.
If you didn’t notice the issue until you started the lash application process, be sure to disinfect and sterilize all tools, equipment, and your hands when the client leaves.
