Mascara and Eyelash Extensions: Yes or No?

For many, the beauty of lash extensions is that they can skip the mascara in their daily makeup routine. When it comes down to mascara vs. lash extensions, extensions will win every time. They provide a richer, deeper, darker, fuller, and more voluminous look than mascara on natural lashes alone.

Because mascara is known to add length, volume, and colour, it may be tempting to add mascara to your lash extensions. However, it’s not recommended to pair mascara and lash extensions. As well, when the lash extensions are done properly, mascara isn’t necessary.

The Dark Side of Mascara

There are a few reasons to avoid mascara if you have eyelash extensions.

It isn’t necessary to achieve a dramatic effect: One reason to avoid mascara is simply that it’s not necessary. You can get a full and dramatic look without it. So, save your time and dollars and put that mascara back in the makeup drawer.

The wrong products may cause extensions to fall out faster: Oil-based mascaras, tube-style mascaras, and mascaras that are extremely waterproof (read – impossible to get off) will cause your lash extensions to fall out very quickly. They contain oils and other ingredients that break down the adhesive that keeps your lash extensions bonded to the natural lash.

Makeup removal is challenging: Washing makeup off full every day is an essential part of a healthy skincare regime. This includes especially taking off mascara. When you apply mascara to lash extensions, full removal of the mascara at the end of the day is very challenging. The extensions make it difficult to get the cleanser down fully to the lash line, so some makeup residue will remain despite your best efforts. As well, excessive scrubbing to attempt to remove that residue will contribute to the extensions falling out faster.

If You Must Use Mascara

If, despite the recommendation, you decide to apply mascara to your lash extensions, be mindful of the following:

  • Do not use oil-based mascara

  • Avoid waterproof mascaras

  • Do not use tube mascaras

  • Consider adding the mascara only to the last two-thirds of the lash to avoid getting residue in the lash line.

  • Discuss your lash goals with your lash technician to see if they can glam up your look so that you can avoid the mascara altogether

The Bottom Line

At the end of the day, the decision to wear mascara with your lash extensions is yours to make. You must be prepared for your lash extensions to fall out faster if you use mascara as a regular habit. However, if you must, be sure to apply gently, using an oil-free product.
