Save the Minks! Choosing Synthetic is Choosing Kindness

Did you know that in 2010 in Ontario, half of a million minks were killed? If you find that shocking, you’ll be even more surprised to know that over 2.5 million minks were killed the same year Canada-wide. Why were so many minks killed? For their fur. Mink fur is a staple pelt used in the fashion world for coats, hats, and accessories. Mink fur is also harvested for use in the cosmetic industry for human eyelash extensions.

Cruelty is in Demand

Despite the known inhumane conditions on mink farms, mink lash enthusiasts insist that only the real thing will do. Mink lashes are well-known for being lighter, softer, and fluffier than synthetic lashes, which some equate to increased comfort. As well, the light mink lashes last longer, and they are thin enough to wear as volume sets that still look incredibly natural and remain comfortable for wearers. Those who desire the most natural look may opt for real mink as well because the soft wispy fur mimics natural lashes. However, these benefits come at the cost of cruelty.

An Ethical Conundrum

Mink farms are not designed with the mink’s comfort in mind. Rather, the idea is to breed and house as many minks as possible so that the fur yield is as robust, and therefore profitable, as possible. Minks are inherently solitary and being forced to live in cramped quarters results in extreme distress for the animals. They’re born into captivity and are usually killed in a fashion that many consider unnecessarily cruel. The idea of breeding an animal with the intention of killing it, or the more general concept of taking a life also does not sit right with many people.

What’s in a Name?

Some mink lashes boast being cruelty-free under the pretense that the mink lashes are retrieved by shaving the mink instead of killing it. However, these labels are deceptive. There are no cruelty-free mink lashes. None. Zero. Zip. All minks farmed for fur endure suffering, deplorable living conditions, and are eventually killed. Don’t allow yourself to be fooled by labels such as “organic,” “all-natural,” or “cruelty-free.”
