Sealant vs. Super Bonder: Which One is Best?

The reality of being a lash technician is that your clients expect a bit of magic, too. They want beautiful long lashes, and they want them to last for a VERY long time. In most cases, it’s a delicate dance between expectation management and using the proper products to ensure the best looking, longest lasting lashes for your clients.

Managing Expectations

Unfortunately, no matter what products we use, or what advancements are made to those products, we can’t stop the natural growth cycle of the eyelash. It is simply not realistic to expect lash extensions to last more than a few weeks, because the lashes they’re attached to are eventually going to fall out. It’s a crucial part of expectation management to ensure that clients understand that no matter what you use – sealant, super bonder, or otherwise, that they will still experience lashes falling out.

Sealant

The purpose of sealant is to provide a barrier between the lash glue and the environmental elements that break down that glue. So, sealant will effectively help the lash extensions adhere to the lashes longer.

Sealant Benefits:

  • Helps retention

  • Aids in preventing lash extensions from twisting

  • Provides a barrier between natural lash, lash extension, and glue to harmful environmental elements

  • Coloured sealants (black) can add depth and dimension to lash extensions

  • Some formulas are designed to nourish natural lashes

  • Can be used on Cashmere and volume lashes

Sealant Drawbacks:

  • Adds a slight sheen to matte lash extensions

  • Does not guarantee lashes will last longer, especially in the absence of proper client aftercare

  • Can be tricky to apply, as the eye line must be avoided

Super Bonder

Super bonder functions like sealant, but with added benefits. However, it features a tighter bond, which blocks glue fumes and increases elasticity at the adhesive bonding points. While absolutely nothing can keep your client’s extensions in place forever, super bonder is known to add some longevity to the length of time clients have the extension before it naturally grows out and falls off.

Super Bonder Benefits:

  • Bond is cured after three minutes

  • Clients can get lashes wet sooner

  • The quick bond locks in glue fumes, reducing irritation

  • Universal application – it works with all glue types

  • Maximum retention

  • Added elasticity means less breakage

Super Bonder Drawbacks:

  • Expert application is a MUST – any skin contact or eye contact will result in extreme discomfort and possible injury

  • Does not guarantee lashes will last longer, especially in the absence of proper client aftercare

  • Higher price point than sealant

The Results are In

When it comes to sealant versus super bonder, there is no definitive “best choice.” It depends on the client’s goals. If your client is getting lashes and leaving immediately for a tropical vacation, they’re going to want to get wet. Super bonder would be a good choice for them. Super bonder is also an excellent choice for clients who are sensitive to the glue fumes or have weaker lashes and experience a lot of breakage.

Sealant is a good choice for lash technicians with no experience applying super bonder, or for clients who want to deepen the look of their lashes by having coloured sealant applied to their extensions.

Talk to your client and set goals together, then decide what product is best. After all, when your client looks and feels great, so do you.
